What is therapy?

Therapy is a confidential and supportive space where you can bring whatever is on your mind and be met with care, respect and understanding by a trained professional.

People come to therapy for lots of reasons. Some arrive in times of crisis, when they are facing loss, having relationship difficulties, or the when they are dealing with the impact of trauma. Others seek therapy as a way of better understanding themselves, building self-confidence, or making lasting changes in their lives. Whatever the starting point, therapy creates the opportunity to slow down and listen more closely to yourself.

Working with a therapist can help you recognise patterns, process painful emotions and develop healthier ways of relating to yourself and others. Although psychotherapy is not about quick fixes, it is about creating the steady, supportive conditions where real change can unfold.

At its heart, therapy is a collaborative process: you and your therapist working together to make sense of your experiences and move towards greater clarity, resilience and wellbeing.

Counselling and Psychotherapy at Shoreditch Therapy Space

What to expect

The first meeting is a chance to talk about what brings you here and to get a feel for how your therapist works. It’s also an opportunity to decide together whether the approach feels right for you.

Sessions are usually held once a week and last around 50 minutes. Group, relationship or couples work may run longer.

How long you stay in therapy depends on your needs and goals, and this can be reviewed as the work develops.

People come to therapy for many different reasons, including:

  • Anxiety, panic or stress

  • Low mood or depression

  • Experiences of trauma or abuse

  • Loss, grief and bereavement

  • Relationship and family struggles

  • Work related issues including burnout

  • Eating difficulties or addictions

  • Questions of identity or self-esteem

  • Sexuality, gender or relationship diversity

  • Obsessive thoughts or behaviours

  • Managing anger and strong emotions

  • Feeling stuck, lacking direction, or navigating life changes

  • ADHD and Autism

  • A wish for self-reflection or personal growth

This is not an exhaustive list but it gives you an idea.  If you’re unsure whether therapy can help with something you are facing, you are welcome to contact a therapist directly to find out more.

All our therapists are fully qualified, insured, and members of professional organisations such as the UKCP or BACP. We are committed to safe, ethical and diversity aware practice and ongoing professional development.
